Interferential Therapy (IFT): Deep Pain Relief Without Medicines
July 25, 2026 · 4 min read · by Nisha · 38
How interferential current therapy reaches deep into muscle tissue to switch off pain signals and reduce swelling.
Interferential Therapy (IFT) uses two medium-frequency electrical currents that cross paths inside the body. Where they meet, they create a much lower "beat frequency" that can travel deeper into tissue than a single low-frequency current — without the skin irritation that can come with TENS alone.
What it does
- Blocks pain signals travelling to the brain (the "gate control" effect)
- Stimulates the body's own natural pain-relieving chemicals (endorphins)
- Improves blood flow, helping reduce swelling in an injured joint or muscle
- Relaxes muscle spasm around an injury
Commonly used for
Acute sprains and strains, post-surgical swelling, chronic back and neck pain, and osteoarthritis flare-ups. It's a comfortable, drug-free option that we frequently combine with manual therapy and exercise.
