Dry Needling for Trigger Points: What to Expect
July 16, 2026 · 4 min read · by Dr. Atharav Mishra · 37
A clear, no-nonsense guide to how dry needling releases stubborn trigger points that cause referred pain and stiffness.
A "trigger point" is a tight, irritable knot inside a muscle that can cause pain not just locally but also in a completely different area of the body — a classic example is a neck trigger point that causes a headache.
The technique
A very fine, sterile needle (much thinner than an injection needle) is inserted directly into the trigger point. This triggers a small, involuntary muscle twitch that helps the tight muscle fibre release and reset. There is no medicine in the needle — it works purely mechanically.
Why it helps
- Reaches deep muscle layers that hands-on massage can't always release
- Often gives immediate reduction in muscle tightness and referred pain
- Speeds up recovery when combined with stretching and strengthening exercises
Mild soreness for a day afterwards is normal and settles quickly. Our therapists always explain the process and get your consent before starting.
